Sooooo…. I have a bruise on my leg.
“Big deal”.
No, it’s not a big deal, it’s not even a big bruise, but it’s there for more than 3 weeks now.
“Weird”.
Well, after reading and inquiring about bruises and MS, it has a simple explanation. It’s not a very pleasant one, though:
- Rebif (and all Interferons, for that matter) lower the immune system’s defenses.
“But your auto-immune system is ALREADY reduced to shambles!”
Yes. But Rebif itself works like a vaccine, which is a small dosage of poison. So, it does reduce the immune system, in the hopes to … let’s say, sparkle its interest to revive itself.
The theory is interesting:
1) The brain and spine lesions reduce the immune system to X%.
2) Rebif lowers the immune system to (X-5)% (and bruising with ease, among other things, rise)
3) In theory, the “MS logistics caretaker” sees a reduction in 5%, thinks it’s being attacked, and retries to increase the immune system to (X-5)+5%.
4) If all goes well, the immune system “relearns” how to heal itself, and restores itself to 100%.
“ahhhh how lovely”
Ok, i transformed the theory in a fairy tale, and there is really no evidence it all works like this.
But hey, do you believe in all fairy tales you read?
